Payment reminder text messages for SMS and WhatsApp

Short messages customers read in seconds. Copy-ready SMS and WhatsApp payment reminders for every stage.

By RemindCash Updated

A payment reminder text should name your business in the first words, state the amount and due date, and contain one clear action such as a short payment link — ideally within one SMS segment. Keep the details for email and use a text to make sure the reminder is seen.

Keep SMS short — character limits matter

One SMS segment holds 160 characters when the message uses only the basic GSM character set. Emojis and many accented letters — including Turkish letters such as ş, ğ and ı — switch the message to Unicode, where a segment holds only 70 characters. Longer messages are split into several segments, and each segment is usually billed separately. Shorten the text or link if you can.

Personalising text messages

  • Start with your business name so the message is recognised before it is opened.
  • Use the customer's first name and one reference they recognise (invoice number or month).
  • Use a short link that opens your payment page directly.
  • Add a phone number only on later reminders, when a conversation may be needed.
  • Avoid emojis in SMS if you want to stay within one segment; they are fine on WhatsApp.
  • Send during business hours in your customer's time zone; never late at night.
  • Only text customers who expect messages from you and have given you their number for this purpose. Follow the messaging rules in your country, including any opt-out requirements.
  • Don't text disputed payments or customers who asked you to stop.
  • One text per reminder step is enough — combine it with an email for the details.
